1.     The Difference Between Passport and Visa

There shouldn’t be any confusion about the difference between passport and visa as they are two entirely different entities but are interrelated. Passport and visa are two important items that you focus on if you are planning to travel to another country. So, what is a passport and what is a visa? We should first know what they are to know the difference between them. In general, passport and visa are two terms often used in connection with foreign travel. There is a lot of difference between the two terms. One of the main differences between passport and visa is that the passport is a travel document whereas the visa is a kind of permission. This article attempts to clarify the difference between a passport and a visa by way of explaining what each item is and the purpose of it.

What is a Passport?

Passport is a travel document that determines and establishes the personal identification of the traveler. Thus, passport has details pertaining to the citizenship and place of birth. To be more precise, a passport contains the owner’s name, sex, date of birth, place of birth, citizenship, and profession. With this information, anyone can find out the nationality and identity of the owner of the passport. The passports also contain the details of the issuing authority, place of issue, and the validity period.

It is important to note that a national government issues the passport of an individual as a kind of travel document. This document establishes the nationality and the identity of the holder of the document. You would do well to know some of the major types of passport such as ordinary passport, official passport, diplomatic passport, temporary passport, family passport, camouflage passport and, of course, fantasy passport, which is not a legal travel document but is a kind of souvenirs.

What is a Visa?

Visa, on the other hand, is a kind of permission that is granted officially by a government to enter, stay, and transit in a particular country. In other words, visa is an official document in the form of an official permission that has to be granted for a person to enter into a specific country. In fact, visa is issued by a government official of the specific country that you would visit.

It is important to consider visa too as a document, a distinct one in the form of a stamp in the passport itself. Moreover, visa is also of various types such as tourist visa, transit visa, business visa, temporary worker visa, and student visa. This only shows that people from various walks of life need to have various kinds of visa as travelers.

What is the difference between Passport and Visa?

• One of the main differences between passport and visa is that the passport is a travel document whereas the visa is a kind of permission.
• Passport confirms your identification while you are traveling to other countries. Visa shows whether or not you have the permission to enter another country.
• Passport is a separate document. Usually, it is a small booklet. However, visa is a stamp that appears on your passport. This is also one of the main differences between passport and visa.
• There are different types of passport and visa. Some major types of passport are ordinary passport, official passport, diplomatic passport, temporary passport, and family passport. Some types of visa are tourist visa, transit visa, business visa, temporary worker visa, and student visa. According to your need, you have to choose the visa.
• Passport is issued by the government of the country you belong to. If you are an American national, then your passport is issued by the American government. Visa, on the other hand, is issued by the government official of the country you hope to visit. For example, if you are planning to visit India, then, Indian government official issues your visa. This is done through the Indian High Commission or the Indian Embassy in your country.
• Normally, getting a passport is not a complicated process. However, getting a visa can be a complicated process as a visa lets someone stay in a country for some time. Depending on the country you hope to visit, the hardship in getting a visa can be more or less. Normally, visiting visa can be gained easily. However, for some countries such as Japan even getting a visiting visa is a hard job.
 2.     The procedures to make Passport and Visa
·        The procedures to make a Passport in Indonesia
1.     For Indonesian citizens who are domiciled or located in the Territory of Indonesia, passport request submitted to the Head Office of Immigration;
2.     For Indonesian citizens who are domiciled outside the Territory Indonesian, passport request filed with the immigration officers who are appointed by Chief Representative of Republic Indonesia;
3.     Publishing of passport at the Immigration Office made through the stages:

a.      Applicant or who are authorized fill out the form in accordance with the columns specified. In the event that the application is submitted via the website, hereinafter referred to as pre-request, the applicant or who are authorized must fill out the electronic form and scan requirements.
b.     Furthermore, for a passport submitted to the Immigration Office counter officers by the applicant or who are authorized accompanied the requirements that have been determined. In case the application is submitted via the website, applicant or who are authorized must submit the evidence of pre-request.
c.      Counter officers verify the original requirements brought by the applicant or a the authorized and then scanning the document, check the results of the scan and check the list of preventive.

·  The procedures to make a Visa for travel to Indonesia
1.       Passport Requirements:
Original, signed passport valid for 6 months beyond stay; for multiple entries the passport must be valid at least 1 year. The passport must have at least four blank passport page available for visa stamp(s). Amendment pages in the back of the passport are not suitable for visa stamps.
New York: The passport must have four blank passport pages.

2.     Indonesia Visa Application Form:
The Consulate of Indonesia requires a visa application form that is completed online.

Your application must: • Display your name exactly as it appears in your passport
• Include answers for all fields
• Be signed by applicant
• Uploaded a photo to your online application. This photograph must match the photo you provided with documentation sent to us.

NOTE: Print the confirmation page and submit with all other visa application documents. Applications that do not include this online visa application confirmation will be rejected by the consulate.

3.     Photo Requirements:
Two recent, identical 2 x 2 passport type photographs, in color, front view and with a plain/white background.
Los Angeles: No glasses may be worn in the photos, and one passport photo must be scanned in order to complete the on-line Indonesian application form.

4.       Letter Of Invitation:
If visiting friends or relatives, a letter of invitation from applicant’s host explaining the relationship to the applicant and the purpose of travel to Indonesia. In addition, the letter must indicate the length of stay, place of stay, and contact information of the host.

5.       Proof of State Residency:
Chicago, Houston and San Francisco: A copy of applicant driver's license. Please enlarge for clarity. Address on driver's license must match address on visa application form.

6.       Proof of Travel Arrangements:
Computer generated flight itinerary from the airline or a travel agency or copy of airline ticket showing entry and departure from Indonesia.

7.       Applicants Under the Age of 18:
A child (under 18) who is not traveling with both parents or a legal guardian must provide a notarized letter of consent signed by the non-accompanying parent(s) or guardian authorizing the Indonesian consulate to issue a visa to the minor. A copy of the child's birth certificate and guardianship or custody agreement documents are also required.

8.       Medical Requirements:
Inoculation is recommended but not mandatory, and is required only if applicant had previously traveled to areas/countries infected by yellow fever.

9.       Proof of Sufficient Funds:
Evidence of sufficient funds; most recent bank statement or letter from the bank providing confirmation of sufficient funds.

10.   Letter of Employment :
Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington DC only: An original letter of employment, certifying that the applicant is an employee of the company in good standing. The letter must indicate the dates for which leave was approved and the intended date of return to the company. If the traveler is retired, financial proof of retirement fund is required.

11.        Special Instructions:
Applicants traveling to restricted areas such as Aceh, Maluku, and Irian Jaya, will need to provide an invitation from the Indonesian government. To obtain an invitation, the applicant must contact the sponsor our counterpart in Indonesia to pursue the Authorization (Otorisasi) at the Clearing House of the Department of Foreign Affairs or at the Indonesian Immigration. When the Authorization is approved, the original Authorization will be faxed either to the Embassy of Indonesia or to the nearest Consulate General to the applicant. In additional to the original, the Notification (Pemberitahuan) of the approval of the Authorization is sent to the applicant's sponsor or counterpart in Indonesia. The visa will be issued based on the original Authorization. Once the approval has been received by the Embassy or Consulate General, the applicant may proceed to send us the visa application form and other visa supporting documents to Travisa for visa processing.
